Jewellery by Frederick was founded by Elliot and Hannah as a continuation of the legacy of Frederick Dowie

Fred Dowie was one of the first New Zealanders to become a gemmologist and distinguished himself by winning the Tully Medal from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain in 1964. Jewellery by Frederick brings these generations of traditional craftsmanship and knowledge into the world of bespoke, retail and online jewellery.

We provide Jewellery without the traditional retail mark-up, using our 146 years of knowledge, relationships and connections with the people behind the industry, we also offer one-of-a-kind pieces handcrafted by our two jewellers here in Christchurch, we offer a more personal approach to fine jewellery.

Elliot grew up around his family’s jewellery store and workshop on Armagh Street, before the Christchurch earthquakes. Surrounded by the trade from an early age, he developed a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship behind each piece and, over the years, found his own place within the family industry.

Hannah brings her creative eye and background in marketing, shaping Jewellery by Frederick’s modern identity while remaining true to the craftsmanship, relationships and heritage that came before it.

Together, Jewellery by Frederick represents the next chapter of a family story — combining generations of knowledge, trusted relationships and traditional craftsmanship with a fresh approach to the way fine jewellery is designed, created and experienced today.
